Problem

None of the image variants ships the Google Cloud CLI (gcloud) or Terraform. CI jobs and workspace sessions that need them have to install them by hand each time.

Findings

  • Neither tool is present today: no gcloud, google-cloud-* or terraform anywhere in the repo, and command -v gcloud terraform finds nothing in ci-latest.
  • Both vendors publish official, signed APT repos with builds for noble: packages.cloud.google.com/apt (google-cloud-cli) and apt.releases.hashicorp.com (terraform).
  • The coder-xfce-vnc (desktop) variant is built FROM coder, which is built FROM base. The ci variant is built FROM base. Installing in base is the only single place that reaches both ci and the desktop. The headless coder variant gets them too.

Proposal

  1. Add one RUN step to the base stage that adds both APT repos, using the same signed-keyring + sources.list.d pattern and fingerprint assertion as the Azul repo, and installs google-cloud-cli and terraform.
  2. Document both tools in the README.
